Community

Do you want to be in a position to reach out and make a difference in our Carrollton community? That is the mission of The Lutheran Church of Messiah.  Over the past decade we have been discovering an ever-growing number of ays to help others in need, some of which are listed below.

MONTHLY ONGOING ACTIVITIES…

  • Bags 2 Blankets Workshops – 3rd Saturday of each month.  Anyone can come as we process ordinary plastic grocery bags into strips that are crocheted into pillows and sleeping mats for the homeless.  Our products have now reached the homeless as far away as Romania and as close is our own community.
  • Monday School at the Rescue Mission. Generally the 1st Monday of the month, Messiah takes a team of “missionaries” of any age to the Rescue Mission, where we meet with kids and their moms, do a Bible lesson, color Bible theme pictures, talk, sing and pray with them.
  • Family Game Nights.  In September we started hosting these events approximately once a month. The next one is October 8, 5-8 p.m.  BYO games and snacks, and prepare to enjoy!

SERVICES TO THE COMMMUNITY

  • Carrollton Senior Citizens Club Meetings - These are generally held monthly at Messiah on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from September through May.
  • NA and AA weekly meetings – are also held at Messiah.
  • Special publications of service to the community
    • Summer 2003 – Experience Carrollton booklet, listed all businesses and organizations in Carrollton.
    • Summer 2010 – Celebrate Carrollton booklet, listed all the events and activities in our community.
    • 2012 – Carrollton High School 50th Anniversary bookMessiah was deeply involved in the research, writing, and publication of this book, which was paid for by sponsorships.
    • September 2016 – brochure listing helping organizations in and around Carrollton created for the Sesquicentennial Family Fun Day
  • Community service hours for CHS students – Students can participate in some of these activities, such as Bags 2Blankets workshops and gain service hours.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY

  • Annual Trunk or Treat – Held each Halloween night, this event provides a safe wholesome environment for children and families to collect treats.
  • Homecoming parade float Messiah partners with Bethlehem to bring you a float each year featuring our commitment to be of service to our community.
  • Collection of personal items for Restoration Community Outreach and Community Village, two local shelters for the homeless or low income.  We collect such donated items as shampoo, body wash, deodorant, shave crème, razors, men’s undershorts, tee shirts, and socks, and deliver these from time to time throughout the year.
  • Collection of cancelled stamps – These stamps are ultimately turned into cash gifts that come back to local charities.
  • Water distribution at Sesquicentennial 5K Walk/Run. Messiah offered free cups and bottles of water to participants and onlookers at last year’s July event.
  • Helped families affected by the fire at the apartments on Michigan and Schust, just one example of how we have helped our neighbors.
