Evangelism and Outreach

Messiah takes seriously the Lord’s call to be involved in reaching out to our community in ways that others will see the love of Jesus. Two of those activities occur every month:

  • MONDAY SCHOOL AT THE RESCUE MISSION.  A team of approximately eight people ranging in age from youth to senior citizens spends one hour at the Rescue Mission in downtown Saginaw, where we sing a couple songs, share a Bible lesson, and engage in an activity, such as coloring a picture illustrating a Bible lesson while visiting with the residents.  On Mother’s Day we have sent carnations for each mom living at the mission, donated by Hank’s Flowerland.
  • BAGS2BLANKETS. For five years Messiah has been meeting on the 3rd Saturday of each month to process ordinary plastic grocery bags—cutting them into strips, looping and rolling these into balls, and using these to crochet sleeping mats and pillows for the homeless.  Members of other churches and the community are willing to drop by and join us from 1-4 pm, helping us to produce over 150 mats and dozens of pillows.  These have been distributed in Saginaw, Flint, Pontiac, and as far away as Romania, wherever the need exists.

More recently we have added our Sunday evening game nights on the 2nd Sunday of most months from 5-8 pm.  These are an excellent opportunity to relax and enjoy the friendly company of others.

Messiah also welcomes opportunities to be involved in our community in helpful ways.  Some of these include…

  • Volunteer work at the Rescue Mission in their Jobs for Life program and Care Crew
  • Donate time and material goods from our rummage sales to Old Town Christian Outreach
  • Support East Side Soup Kitchen
  • Participated in the Carrollton 5K Walk/Run by passing out water to participants
  • Hold an annual Vacation Bible School with music, crafts, and games, welcoming children from our neighborhood
  • Participate in the Zilwaukee Festival with a float and a booth
  • Participate in the Carrollton Schools Open House, giving information on services provided by our church that would be of use to the community
  • Make our building available for monthly Carrollton Senior Citizens Club meetings
  • Partner with Bethlehem Lutheran to participate in the Carrollton Homecoming Parade
  • Hold an annual Trunk or Treat that welcomes all elementary school children from the community
  • Make our building available for weekly AA and NA meetings, as well as quarterly Neighborhood Watch meetings

Our church will evaluate other opportunities to play a useful role in the community as they come along.

We also collect items that are useful in helping others:

  • EMPTY PRESCRIPTION BOTTLES. So far we have donated over 1500 of these to be used by medical missionaries in foreign lands.
  • CANCELLED STAMPS. These are given to the Stamp Sorters of St. Mark, who turn them over to a clearinghouse for stamp collectors in return for cash that is donated to local agencies for the needy.

Prayer Ministries

Prayer is an important aspect of the spiritual life of our church family, one Messiah takes seriously.  For a decade and a half our church has offered coordinated Prayer Ministries in which most of our adult members are involved, offering intercessory prayer on behalf of the ministry of our church, her members, and people dear to us.

MESSIAH’S PRAYER CHAIN.  This ministry offers prayer as emergencies occur.  The prayer need is called in to the coordinator, who in turn passes it down the prayer chain, so many are aware of and praying for the need to be met.

INTERCESSORS.  This ministry involves members praying for specific people daily, with their prayers ideally based on the petitions of The Lord’s Prayer.

PRAYER MINISTRIES UPDATE.  Around mid-month an update is assembled that includes the prayer needs of the ministry and her members, as well as thanksgiving and praise for what the Lord has been doing in our midst.  Ministry participants receive a copy of this, by email if possible.
